Create & Publish Beautiful Content
The Content is one of the most important aspects of your digital signage. Using Pixelart Design Studio you can build both simple and complex Ads to publish to your Screens quickly and easily. In this guide, we will introduce the concepts of building an Ad in our Design Studio.
When creating a Campaign you need to outline three things:
- - What to play | Content
- - Where it will play | Location
- - When it will play | Schedule
The Design Studio takes care of What. Regardless of the type of Content you need to create, simple or advanced, the Design Studio will help you to create engaging Ad for your Screens.
Most users simply want to publish a series of images/videos, this type of Ad can be created very easily in just minutes. We have outlined all the awesome features of the our Design Studio for you below:
1. Glossary - Design Studio Terms
It is important you understand the following terms and what they mean before we go any further:
Canvas: The area where you build your Ad by dragging & dropping your Content.
Content: The videos, images and apps.
Layer: A placeholder for your Content; by default, Canvas has one Layer where you can drag & drop content.
Sublayer: Layers can be split into smaller layers, sublayers that allow you to play Content in different areas of a screen simultaneously.
2. Uploading Content
Uploading images or videos is super simple, you can do this in a few ways so whatever works best for you has hopefully been covered.
Method 1: Drag and drop your desired Content directly from your desktop into your Content Library
Method 2: Use the good old fashioned button
Tip: We support most image/video formats and they are automatically converted to the right format for your Player; the display size of the asset depends on your screen size and orientation, but we will come to touch on this in more detail later in the guide.
3. Creating Basic Ads
To start creating a basic Ad, simply drag & drop your desired Content over to the Layer on your Canvas.
When you add more than one Content it will create a Carousel: the Ad will then loop through the Content when it’s being played on the Screens.
You can go flick through your Carousel using the navigation arrows found either side of your Layer. To edit the order, simply go to the section in the top right hand side; here you can rearrange your Carousel by dragging the Content up/down. You can also remove a section from the Carousel by pressing the X button.
Note: If you only want basic Ads, you can pretty much stop here but if you want to know more then continue on...we dare you 😜
4. Creating Advanced Ads
Deep dive and customise your Ads even further. These are all the functions you will find in your side panel in the Pixelart Design Studio:
Tip: For the best experience using Pixelart Design Studio click the button in the top left hand corner to make the Studio full screen.
A Layer is like a container for Content: images, video, and apps. If you drop more than one Content into a single Layer it will create a Carousel, playing each Content one after another.
Now you should have a few different types of Content in your Library: images, videos, and apps. You can filter/search the Content in your Library by the Content type or even by name.
You are not limited to just videos and images with Pixelart, you can also enrich your Ads with awesome apps from our APP STORE. To open the APP STORE just click the button or tab from the side menu. You can read more about an app and preview it by clicking on the app icon in the store. To add an app to your PIXEL LIBRARY just click the + button.
Check out our App Store for more details.
5. Content Settings
When you add Content (videos, images, apps) to a Layer of the Canvas you will automatically be taken to the LAYERS panel where you will see two main sections:
A list of all the added Content in a Layer will show here. The order of the Content indicates the order in which they will be played by a screen
Here you can edit the settings of the selected Content (video, image, app) such as sizes, orientations and login settings.
You can open Content either by pressing in the main Canvas or from the section where you can click on the Content you wish to edit.
Each type of Content has a unique set of settings. Here, we will explain image and video settings, but you can learn more about specific app settings in the individual App Articles.
Closing & Opening Settings
If the Settings panel is in your way, you can close it by pressing and to open it again just click the arrow in the top left of the Settings panel.
6. Image Settings
To make sure your image looks its best we have six settings to choose from:
Fit To Screen: Decides the best fitting strategy when there is a size mismatch between the image and the Screen: it tries to best display the entire image by using either ‘Fit Width’ or ‘Fit Height’.
Original Size: Displays the image in its original size, if the screen and image sizes do not match, some of the image might get cropped out.
Fit Width: Fits the image width to the Screen width. You might want to use this when you are displaying a landscape image on a portrait screen.
Fit Height: Fits image height to the Screen height. You might want to use this when you are displaying a portrait image on a landscape screen.
Full Screen: Resizes the image so that it fills the entire screen.
Tile: Repeats the image in its original size so that it covers the entire Screen. This is usually used for creating backgrounds Content.
Tip: Always your Ad first to make sure it looks right and no distortion has occurred.
Duration in Seconds
Here you can set how long an image should be displayed. So if you set Duration to 5 seconds the image will be displayed for 5 seconds before moving on to the next Content in the Carousel.
This rotates the image by the indicated degrees.
You should always try to upload the image with the correct orientation in the first place but if for any reason you wish to change it you can do so here. Hey perhaps you like things sideways! We won’t judge.
7. Video Settings
Because video is always fixed in size, it cannot adjust to the Screen size automatically without some distortion, that's why you need to always make sure your video size is correct size.
Tip: If the size for the video and the Screen do not match you can manually amend this using the below settings which may help:
Original Size: displays the video in its original size; if the screen and video sizes do not match some of the video might get cropped out.
Fit Width: fits video width to the Screen width. You might want to use this when you are displaying a landscape video on a portrait screen.
Fit Height: fits video height to the Screen height. You might want to use this when you are displaying a portrait video on a landscape Screen.
Fit To Screen: decides automatically the best fit to height or width: it tries to show the whole video. However, this too could potentially distort your video if the size mismatch is significant.
Here you can set the number of times you want a video to be played before the next Content is displayed.
8. Layer Settings
In addition to your Content settings, you also have seperate Layer settings. To view/edit your Layer settings simply click on the tab and then select the specific Layer you want to edit, here you can change:
- Layer Name, useful for referencing
- Background Colour/Image
- Apply Transition Effects to the content in the Carousel
If you want to play different Content simultaneously on one Screen, for example a promotional video with the live local weather forecast underneath, you can split the Screen display into sublayers vertically or horizontally using the Screen Splitting Tool.
Tip: You can change the exact size of the split by dragging the splitter line across the Screen. To change the orientation of your split just click the ROTATE button.
You can manage your Sublayers in the section, the main functions are:
- Move Content across Layers
- Delete a Layer (deleting a Layer also deletes any sublayers)
- Rename your Sublayers by clicking on the title
These are the buttons you will find across the top toolbar in the Design Studio:
You should name your Ad here in the top left corner; dont worry if you forget it, our “intelligent” name generator will do it for you. Be warned it has been known to produce some rather outlandish names!
Here will display the total time of your created Ad in seconds. Please note it will count all Layers.
Of course we have the age old favorites too, such as the good old undo and redo buttons. Here you can ‘time travel’ your actions, a handy fail safe for over clickers (like our founder!)
Does exactly as it says, click here to cancel your Ad creation. We will warn you before you leave without saving just in case you click it by mistake, we are nice like that.
Here you can preview your Ad before clicking publish, this is a handy tool to make sure your Ad is looking slick before it goes live on your screen network. You can even view it in various Aspect Ratios to ensure you are seeing the correct result.
Save & Close
Does what it says on the...erm...button? This is the final step, the cherry on the cake of Ad creation, simply click this to save your Ad and close the Design Studio.
10. Other Cool Features
These are some of the additional features of the Pixelart Design Studio that we wanted to highlight (yeah we are proud ok).
Relative vs. Absolute
What you see on the Canvas in the Design Studio is not an exact representation of how your Ad will look on the Screen. It just shows a relative positioning of all the Contents in your Ad. You can view how your Ad will look on different types of Screen formats using the function.
This means that you don’t need to create a new Ad separately for each screen size and orientation, you only need to create the Ad once and it will automatically adjust to the screen size and orientation it is running on. You’re welcome 😃
